Back2Blogging -- Back to the Beginning

By Jennifer (Double Duty Mommy) at 7:44 PM 1 commented
I'm taking part in the "Back to Blogging" events hosted by the SITS girls in an effort to get back into the swing of things all the craziness of summer.

Today is the first day, so if you're interest in participating, there's plenty of time to get involved. Learn how by clicking here. The event is sponsored by Standards of Excellence, Westar Kitchen and Bath, and Florida Builder Appliances!

Our assignment today was to repost our VERY FIRST blog post, which I titled "My First Post" So here goes! Join in the week of fun with me!

Wow, so here we go, my first post here at Double Duty Mommy! How scary but liberating at the same time.

I've been wanting to create a page like this for some time now. I used to have my very own website before I had my daughter (from 2002-2004) but then of course things got busy after her and I just stopped updating all together and dropped my page from this wild world of the internet.

So to say in the least I'm glad I'm back and I'm hoping I can stick to this.

Yes, I kept it short and simple! :) Now I know there was so much more I could have written but I was just starting out and I just wanted to blog without thinking about what I really wanted to say at that point!

How We're Reducing Our Risk Of SIDS-- Halo SleepSack Swaddle Review & Giveaway

By Jennifer (Double Duty Mommy) at 11:39 AM 312 commented
I think if you ask any parent what their worst fear is, SIDS would be in the top 5 things they mention.
I can tell you first hand that I just stare at Kendall watching her sleep, just so I see her chest moving. Plus, she's cute so who doesn't want to watch a sleeping baby!
Kendall loves to be swaddled. I swear besides mommy & daddy, it's probably one of her favorite things right now. As she's gotten stronger though, she can get out of her swaddle and then the blanket is just loose in her bed. This has scared me 'cause of course there is always the chance that she can pull the blanket over her face and not be able to move it!

We were sent the Halo SleepSack Swaddle from Halo to review. It's what you love from a sleepsack combined with a swaddling so babies arms are inside as well. This eleminates the need for blankets that can potentially harm and smother your baby. Swaddling has become a huge staple in helping baby sleep better and longer because the blanket hugs your baby to prevent the startle reflux.
Babies tend to throw their arms up all the time especially while sleeping and this prevents them getting a good nights sleep. Keeping babies arms down next to them is safe and again, will keep them from waking up if they are startled. On the inside of the Right swaddle strap there is an easy to read instruction panel that can help you use your Halo SleepSack better.

I love that the Halo is made of 100% cotton that helps prevent overheating. It's designed to keep the fabric from getting near baby's face (as you can see in the 1st picture) & it also has adjustable fastener strips so you'll be able to use it for a while with your growing baby.
The swaddle feature is easily removable with hidden velcro straps so if your baby doesn't like swaddling but you still want to keep your baby safe, the Halo SleepSack is 2-1!
The Halo SleepSack is also machine washable and dryable with all colors so there's no extra steps needed when washing. Makes a busy mom's life just that much more simple if you ask me.

Wearable blankets are suggested for use by the American Academy of Pediatrics as a way to help prevent SIDS! And of course... "Back Is Best" as always!
-- Since reviewing the Halo SleepSack we have purchased two more on
our own because Kendall loved it so much! --

Halo sells a variety of the SleepSack starting at around $30

Being a housewife...

By Jennifer (Double Duty Mommy) at 8:53 PM 3 commented
... is something I love to do and be. It really is. But honestly it's SO damn hard. Why is it so hard for men to wrap their heads around the fact that yes, even though you go to work every day, moms NEVER have a day off?
I have to say though, my husband does an extremely good job on helping me around the house and with our daughters.
We've pretty much found our roles in the house and are in a really good groove.

He gives Kendall a bath every night - dries her, lotions her baby skin and dresses her. Then I take over and feed her, swaddle her (he hasn't gotten the swaddle down to a quick science like I have, lol) then he puts her to sleep and she's out till 3am. He gets up with her then - changes, & feeds then wakes me only to swaddle her up once more.At 6am I get up with her because at 7 I get Makenna ready for school, pack her lunch while I let John sleep in a bit more. Then John (if he doesnt work in the AM that day) takes her to school so Kendall and I can go back to sleep for 2 hours.

Our house is surprisingly still in perfect condition most days. I do dishes during the day and if there is anything at night he does them. I do laundry at least once a day and most of the time he'll fold & put it away.

Even on his days off he's amazing. One of his days we'll lounge around the house or go run errands but the other day is MOMMY DAY. He takes the girls out for pretty much the whole day while I get to be at home (or go to where I want by myself!). A normal person would probably sleep though, wouldn't you think? What do I do? I clean. I deep clean the bathrooms, kitchen, dust, do extra laundry.. you name it. I've figured out I clean because I get to do it uninterupted. I dont have Makenna stopping me every 2 seconds or a baby crying that I have to tend to. I can just clean at my own pace and make sure it's done to my standard. But even once I'm done cleaning I hop online and tweet. Lol, I know I'm a tad bit crazy.

I've been a stay-at-home mom since December of last year (2009). We had already decided once I was pregnant that I wouldn't work anymore. We have the means and I definitely do not need to work so thankfully I was able to quit my job and be at home with Makenna and have a very relaxing pregnancy.

Most women wish for my job. To not work and just be at home with their kids. Believe me, I do love it and I never take for granted that I don't have to work. My husband is amazing for having 2 jobs (well only 1 really counts since the other doesn't bring us an income to really count on. He just has it for the perks!) and he never complains about having to work and then coming home to take Kendall off my hands. I'm finding that even with Makenna in school for 6 1/2 hours every day I WANT to work again. I've always been that type though. I work extremely hard and I always want a job. Being at home makes me so restless (probably why I clean so much) and I get cabin fever very easily.

John doesn't want me to work since I don't have to, plus in his family "the women shouldn't have to work, that's the man's job" (his family rules... not mine, lol). But he and his family had another thing coming when I stepped into the picture. I love working, which is why I've been applying for jobs. The problem I keep encountering when I go in for interviews is my schedule. Even though I wanna work I only want maybe 10 hours/week. Of course everyone wants me to work more or make me a manager (since that's my background), which would mean lots of hours and long hours.

So now I'm stuck. I want to work but I don't want to work a lot.

I guess I'll just stick to my mommy job and call it a day.

My Biggest Helper -- Balboa Baby Nursing Pillow Review and Giveaway

By Jennifer (Double Duty Mommy) at 5:40 PM 404 commented

*CLOSED*

Simple and fashionable the only contoured nursing pillow for mom and baby’s comfort.
Developed with lactation consultants and medical professionals, the Balboa Baby® Nursing Pillow makes nursing easier and more comfortable. The innovative Nursing Pillow is contoured to fit around the mother easily without the use of complicated zippers, buckles, or straps. Designed to help ease stress on your back, neck, and shoulders, the Nursing Pillow lifts baby up to the proper level for more relaxed feeding. The unique contoured design encourages correct feeding position by naturally rolling baby towards mother. Pillow is soft, comfortable and just firm enough to support your baby while nursing. The Nursing Pillow features a removable, 100% cotton cover for easy cleaning and comes in prints to coordinate with your nursery and home.
(from the Balboa Website)
Although it turns out we can't actually breastfeed I still use my Balboa Baby Nursing Pillow to feed Kendall. It makes holding her a ton easier on my arms and back.
Unlike other nursing pillows I've seen and used the Balboa Baby Nursing Pillow is the firmness and support it offers. Other pillows are nice but they are too soft and offer little support.

The contoured shape is great for around the front of your body or even the side (if you like the football hold). The outside of the pillow is slightly raised so your baby can roll towards you.
One of the things I like is the Nursing Pillow is easy to use without having complicated zippers, straps or buckles to figure out.
The cover is also 100% cotton machine washable so you dont have to worry about any special washing care for the pillow cover. With 5 different cover patternes you'll definitely one a print you like.

The Balboa Baby Nursing Pillow retails for about $45.99.
Find a retailer near you on the Balboa Baby website.

A New Love -- Sleepy Wrap Review

By Jennifer (Double Duty Mommy) at 10:50 AM 0 commented
With Makenna I had one of those regular store bought carrier things. I NEVER wore it though. It was so uncomfortable and really, not cute at all. I decided that babywearing was definitely not for me.
Once I was pregnant with Kendall I soon saw that there were soo many carrier options out there and one of those were called wraps. I honestly had NO idea what a wrap was so I was pretty excited when I given the chance to review a Sleepy Wrap.

Since I didn't know what a wrap was of course I didn't know what to expect. I soon discovered it was a really long piece of fabric that you wrap around your body in different ways to achieve different ways of holding your baby. I was extremely intimidating when I unwrapped it and saw really how long it was. I was sent a small but I still thought it was too long and maybe I was sent the wrong size, lol.

The fabric is super comfy, and stretchy. The first few times I wore Kendall I found that after wearing her for a while, she started to sag a little lower. Now that I've done it more and more often I found the wrap just needed to be tied really tightly. I made it where it’s a little too tight in the beginning but after a while it was the perfect fit.

The fabric is lightweight and breatheable but because there is so much fabric wrapped around my body it still becomes a little hot to wear for long periods of time here in Florida. I wear it mostly around the house since of course I'm in an air conditioned place so both Kendall and myself stay comfortable.
Like I've mentioned before I EP (exclusively pump breast milk) so of course that means bottles in this house. When we went out to the mall I was hoping Kendall wouldn't get hungry 'cause I wasn't sure how I'd feed her. Soon she became fussy and hungry. I was easily able to just place the bottle in Kendall's mouth with her head sideways. I leaned the bottle up against my shoulder and the fabric easily held it in place. After a while Kendall started to move around and when I looked down I saw the bottle was empty. I COMPLETELY forgot she was in there eating, that's how comfortable and easy everyting was.

When tying your wrap one of the most important things you must remember is your baby should always be close enough to kiss!
The baby's head should be close enough to you that you can bend down and easily kiss the top of her head. If you cannot bend far enough to reach the baby, then she is too low. If the baby is too low, there is a higher risk of breathing difficulty, and you may feel that the baby is insecure or may fall out of the carrier. Wearing a baby too low will also cause backaches. (from KansasCity.com from Melissa Radcliffe)
Both Kendall and I LOVE this wrap. When she's really fussy I can quickly put her in the wrap and I'd say sometimes within 3-5minutes she's in a deep sleep. At that point it makes it easier for me to do so much around the house or just sit and tweet with everyone in peace!

Side note: technically there is not a weight restrictions since the design of the baby wrap equally distributes the weight of your baby so there are no pressure points on mom or baby. It has been tested at 45 pounds and showed no signs of stress or overuse. (per Sleepy Wrap site).
I decided to test this theory with my 5 year old 38lb daughter.
Honestly it probably needed to be tied tighter because I was only able to hold her for maybe 5 minutes. I'm 5'4" and I weigh 120lbs so it was pretty hard on my shoulders to hold her. Again, I think if I was able to make it tighter it would have been ok but I wrapped her up pretty quickly so it's probably my own fault I couldn't wear her longer.
The picture from the Sleepy Wrap website is with a 5 year old girl as well but both mom & daughter look comfortable and happy...
Sleepy Wrap has changed my mind on babywearing and I now have a whole new love for it. Kendall is a swaddle loving baby and I know wearing her gives her the same comfort that swaddling does.

The Classic Sleepy Wrap like the one I recieved is $39.99.
Yyou can recieve 10% off your order using the code: Double until 10/9/2010
